On May 1, thousands of freaks dressed scantily and did the unhuman in Broad daylight -- they ran and ran and ran! I kid. I've got respect for people who train and who run and who compete in running, but man, my high school cross country memories are well over a decade old these days. All the same, it gave good reason to 1, cheer these folks on and 2, go to the Finish Line to see an area of Philly few civilians have other than from I-95: The Navy Yard.

The Navy Yard ended its run as a naval base in 1996, but there are plenty of offices still in use, and the open spaces are slated for use as a new commerce park. Development's already under way, as you'll see in just a moment. The masterplan for the Yard is found on this well done, comprehensive web site. These pictures are just a glance at the 2005 state of things. Be sure to note the cruise ship, symbolic of an industry on the rise in Philadelphia.
