The twin towers of Commerce Square are often the forgotten big boys of the Philly skyline. (They missed the cut for the
phillyskyline.com graphic in favor of the Drake and Cira Centre.) Designed by Henry Cobb of Pei Cobb Freed, the towers
were originally to be one half of a pair of pairs on West Market Street, but when Blue Cross never built their tower's
twin, it left this very quirky, very 80s, 41 story pair as the western bookend of Philly's new skyline. One Commerce Square was completed in 1987 (along with One Liberty Place) while Two Commerce Square rounded out the city's building boom in 1992. Building Two was the last office tower built in Philadelphia until Cira Centre began construction in 2004. |
