Mantua.

You may have heard tales of it. Philly's original "Black Bottom" or just "The Bottom" as locals call it.

This section of West Philadelphia, just across the Schuylkill River from the Art Museum, just north of University City and just west of the Zoo and "Centennial District", is among the most blighted and crime-ridden in the city. The city's worst mass murder, the Lex Street killings in 2000, occurred here.

One could go on and on about the neighborhood's less-than-stellar attributes but I would never be caught dead or alive in a place that didn't have some spark of potential left to it and I certainly wouldn't go there with a camera. You may see for yourself that all is not lost here in "The Bottom".

Folks, Mantua.

(Note: Some of these were taken outside of Mantua proper in adjacent neighborhoods.)
