This is the building from whence the neighborhood takes its name. Strawberry Mansion was built as 'Summerville' in 1790 by Judge William Lewis, who authored the first law abolishing slavery in the US.

It was renamed 'Strawberry Mansion' in the 1870s after the Fairmount Park Commission was created and it assumed responsibility for the building. During the summer months, it became a popular destination for strawberries and cream.
