In January 2005, Comcast and Liberty Property Trust made it official when they announced they will be going ahead with plans to build a 57 story, 975 foot skyscraper that
will eclipse One Liberty Place as the tallest building in Philadelphia. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York, Comcast Center's construction means so much
more to the city than just a trophy showcase for the cable giant. Its integration with Suburban Station reintroduces transit to the street level (at a time when SEPTA sorely needs it). Its eco-minded features (such as recycled materials and an average of 15 foot floor-to-ceiling windows) suggest smart corporate citizenry. Its construction in times of substantial office vacancy indicate a massive confidence to continue local growth, as Comcast has been doing for years and years. And come on man, it's completely altering the skyline! It's an already exciting time to be in Philadelphia, but Comcast Center is its pinnacle. The new king of the Philly skyline will also be the tallest building between New York and Chicago when it opens in spring 2008. |
